Seventeen New Memberships in 2001!During 2001, seventeen new non-student memberships were received by the BCRC. Thanks for your membership, aprticipation, and support of rowing. Hopefully the more experienced members have met and rowed with these new members! WELCOME to our new members!"Strokes"... A note from the President
Frank StarkweatherAs an organization, we have made tremendous progress in the last few months. The IRS letter granting us 501(c)3 status has been received, and a Grands Committee has been ser up to raise money for more boats. We hosted the USRA Level 1 Coaches Clinit, and had a great turnout from our club members. That makes possible a much larger program this summer.Wah-Wah-Sum - - A Work of Art?
The Wah-Wah-Sum is a star attraction at the Midland Center for the Arts, and will join with the other boats in the St. Patrick's Day Parade down Center Avenue.
The architect is drawing up the bid documents for the Boat House repairs, and plans are underway to give it a fresh coat of paint this summer. You can help. We have a web site under construction, a new Safety Committee, and a membership drive ready to start. The ice is out of the river, and rowing can begin as it warms up.
The Central Crew has won a ton of medals at the erg races. The Board has been outstanding in their ideas and organization. It promises to be a banner year the the BCRC.So when is a racing shell a work of art? When it spends the winter on display in the main gallery of the Midland Center for the Arts.Members Receive Coaching Certification
The Wah Wah Sum, a 1961 Schoenbrod eight, has been the center of attraction in the Arts Midland display of Great Lakes nautical art and craft. The exhibit opened on January 12 and has had thousands of visitors.
Nearly 20 people have filled out cards expressing interest in the Bay City Rowing Club! The displya runs through March 10th. So there is still some time to check it out.
Special thanks to Scott Hardy, Kyle Cozad, Steve Skillman, Greg Dickson and Frank Starkweather for delivery and set-up, and members of the BCCHS Crew for de-rigging and loading.

BAY CITY ROWING CENTER
P.O. Box 1144
Bay City, MI 48706-1144The BCRC now has eight, that's right, eight new Level 1 coaches certified by the US Rowing Association. These people all successfully completed the two-day course, conducted by a USRA Midwest regional representative.Comins Soon: www.BayCityRowing.org
The club hosted the session, which was held at the Bay County Community Center and the Bay City Rowing Center. Other participants traveled from Cincinnati, Chicago, and Grand Rapids. This training adds significant capability to the club, particularly in our ability to support existing and new rowing programs for our members - in a very safety conscious way.
Congratulations to all!The BCRC board has elected to establish an internet website for members as well as those in the area interested in learning more about rowing. The site will be provided by OJ Advertising / Mid-Michigan Computer Consultants at cost as a qualified "community service web site". The club will pay for hosting, but OJA/MMCC will build and maintain the site without charge.Join the Parade - Promote rowing
Content is expected to include descriptions of the club, programs, events calendar, membership application, benefits, contacts, race schedules and results, and links to other related web sites. If you have anything that you want to see on the site, send us an E-mail.Why watch the parade when you can be in it! The BCRC will be in the annual Bay City St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday, March 17. All members are encouraged to join in the celebration. Plans are not final as yet, but will include the use of the boat trailer with as many boats as we can put on it, and signs that identify our club, the high school program and Learn to Row day.FUND RAISER FOR BAY CITY CENTRAL CREWThe Bay City Central Crew is currently selling $5.00 off coupons for the Younkers "Make A Difference" Spring Benefit Sale. A $5.00 coupon may be used on each item that you purchase and there is no limit on the number of tickets that may be purchased. If you are interested in purchasing a ticket, please contact a BCC Crew member or call 684-7947 to make ticket arrangements.LOOK FOR THE "MEMBERS" BULLETIN BOARDA new bulletin board will be created shortly, at the boathouse, that will contain information on and for members. It will include the current membership list, pictures and brief descriptions of new members, basic rules or policies that members should be aware of, and the calendar of events - which is currently posted in the office. We also hope to include rowing preferences (time, type of rowing, etc.) to help members match up and row with others.WINTER PARTY SUCCESSSpecial thanks to the Skillman family for opening their home to the BCRC. The winter party on February 9 was a great success, with excellent treats and even some erg competition in the basement. I guess that's what happens when rowing enthusiasts get together.YOUR SAFETY COMES FIRSTOne of the things that became apparent during the USRA Level I coaching clinic was the critical importance of safety on and off the water. To reinforce this within the BCRC, safety is now identified as a specific responsibility of one of the board committees. In addition, the following resolution was passed to promote the buddy system during more extreme conditions.BCCHS CREW PUBLISHES RACE DATES
The BCRC will not sanction rowing in conditions where the combined water and air temperature is below 100 degrees F.
If these conditions exist, the BCRC encourages at least "four oars in the water." That is, rowing with a partner. Please use caution and good judgement. The tentative spring race schedule for the Bay City Central High School Crew has been released. Many of the BCRC members plan on attending some of these races, in support of the Crew. Join in the support!BAY CITY CENTRAL CREW ERG RESULTS
