NEWSLETTER GOES ELECTRONIC DO WE HAVE YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS?This will be the first BCRC newsletter that will be mailed both by regular mail and electronically. It is hoped that we can eventually reduce the regular mailing costs by electronic distribution - and the use of our website. If you haven't been to the website lately, take a look at it! We now have 52 e-mail addresses, but if we don't have your address and you would like to get on our distribution, please send it (or any other name/address updates) to BCRC Web MasterSTEPHEN KENT NOW SERVING AS TREASURERJust in case you were wondering about the BCRC Board of Directors, they meet on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the boathouse. - Lora Brehm

I asked Tricia Smrecak, the outgoing captain of the Bay City Central High School Crew, if she had any final comments for me to pass along. Here is what she said:NEW "UNDER 27" MEMBERSHIP CATEGORY"I don't really have to much to say for the newsletter. I think this past year we went out and did a lot more than we expected to do. We received a lot of medals, we raised a pretty big chunk of change, and we had a lot of fun doing it. I would like to commend the new Head Coach, Scott Hardy, for an outstanding season. Not only did he have big shoes to fill as Mike's replacement, but now he has to fill his own shoes from this past year. Stacey was a great co-captain, and she did anything and everything I asked of her. I'm going to miss all of my crew cronies, but my mom wasn't too keen on me being a 5th year senior."Tricia hopes to row as a freshman at St. Lawrence University, in the North Country of New York State.
From the editor: If you would like to submit an article for our next newsletter, or if you have any suggestions regarding the newsletter, please forward to Kerry Baker at skbaker62@chartermi.net or Greg Dickson at gdickson@dow.com.At the May board meeting, a resolution was passed that significantly changed one of the membership categories. With the desire to better align with the membership categories of the U.S. Rowing Association and to further encourage young adults to either take up or continue rowing, the "Under 18" category was changed to "Under 27." Prior to this change, anyone 18 or older was required to purchase an "Individual" membership at $120 per year versus the $55 per year cost for "Under 18."PLEASE WELCOME OUR MANY NEW MEMBERSSince April of this year, the Bay City Rowing Club has added 32 new memberships. This is a significant influx of new rowers to the club, considering the fact that there were only 51 total memberships at the beginning of the year. We hope that you enjoy rowing for years to come.BCRC HOSTS WPI TRAINING WEEKEND

Julie JordanFor the third year in the last four, Greg Dickson and his buddies from Worcester Polytechnic Institute will be racing in the Head of the Charles this fall in the Masters 4+ event. They are all 1971 graduates of WPI that raced together during college. Yup, they're old, but they all row sub-20 minute 5,000-meter erg pieces and although they couldn't sustain a 34-stroke rate, they plan to row this fall's 3-mile race at a 32.HOW DOES THE GRASS GET SHORT?
On the weekend of June 21, Paul Popinchalk flew in from Connecticut, Doug Michel took a boat and a plane from Block Island, Rhode Island, and Don Usher flew in from Georgia. All converged on the boathouse for four practice sessions, with Colleen Janeiro, performing the coxswain duties. Colleen is an intern at Dow Chemical this summer, and will return to row her senior year at University of Massachusetts - Lowell this fall. Everyone appreciated the hospitality of the club. ![]()
L to R - Don Usher, Doug Michel, Colleen Janeiro,
Paul Popinchalk and Greg Dickson. This was Colleen's
21st birthday. How did you, or will you, spend yours?
Did you ever wonder this year how the grass got cut? Scott Hardy and his trusty truck and lawn tractor is the answer. Scott - your effort is greatly appreciated. Thank you!BOATHOUSE IMPROVEMENTS COMINGAfter seemingly lengthy discussion with the city, a bid package for physical improvements to the boathouse is near complete, and should go out for bids shortly. The project scope includes baluster replacement and other repair work, a new keyless entry system, and wider doors. We still hope to see the work completed this year.BAY CITY CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL CREW NOTESIt doesn't seem like we should be thinking about the fall race schedule already, but Scott Hardy, Bay City Central High School Crew Head Coach, certainly is. Scott reported at a recent board meeting that he is planning three head races this fall (Wyandotte, Toledo, and Elkhart) and it looks like five races will be on the spring schedule. And that's just on the water - remember how successful this past indoor season was for the Crew. Go Crew!BCRC PARTICPATES IN MIDLAND RIVERDAYS
Tricia also provided me with this note regarding the Crew: "The captain this year is Corey Flues, and the co-captain is Katie Hintz. They are already going to kick my butt in fundraising, because they raised $500 over the 4th of July. I think they'll do well." Good luck to Corey and Katie.BCRC ADDS TWO NEW (USED) BOATSSome of our boats went on the road, Saturday July 20th to participate in the Midland Riverdays celebration. Members Colleen Janeiro, Mary Schoberth, Leigh Schoberth, Susan Hearn and Greg Dickson represented the BCRC at the event. Colleen, Leigh and Greg provided an on-water rowing demonstration, narrated on the Tridge by John McPeak. We had a tent, table, erg, an Alden, a Jullien, a Kaschper racing single and the Vespoli 4+ (Future Winds) set up for display from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It certainly drew a lot of attention and conversation.
Special thanks to those that helped with trailer preparation, boat loading and unloading, including Will Brewster, Mike Wackerly, Karen Blood and her daughter and her best buddy from Philadelphia.Have you seen the two new additions to the BCRC's boat selection? In May, the club purchased a used Kaschper 4+ and a used Kaschper 8+ from the Lincoln Park Rowing Club. These boats add needed capacity to expand our team and sweep rowing programsPLEASE DON'T LEAVE US
Thanks to Will Brewster for making the arrangements, and to Will and Barbara Anuszkiewicz for making the trip to Chicago with the trailer to pick up the new equipment. As of this writing and barring any errors - which are quite possible - the following memberships have lapsed. We hope that you will continue to enjoy rowing with the BCRC.YOU TOO CAN BE A PAINTER

Well, it's time to paint again.
We have the paint, and Frank Starkweather is coordinating the painting work detail. Please contact Frank if you can devote a couple of hours to improving the appearance and the longevity of our boathouse. Frank can be reached at 989-892-5520 or bportdda@concentric.net .It seems like old news now, but in May the BCRC participated in the 2nd annual National Learn to Row Day. It was a lot of work, with the development of 2002 introduction to rowing programs, creation of brochures and mailers to members and potential new members, and advertising by local media, but we had a very good turn out, considering the weather - which was less than ideal! There were 65 participants overall, including 28 club members who helped to make it a success.
Thanks to everyone that helped with the pre-work and on May 18th. The TV news reporter turned out to be a rower, and gave us some great coverage that evening. I hope you saw it.
As an added bonus, the BCRC won one of only ten prizes awarded nationally by the U.S. Rowing Association - a free weekend sculling clinic at Craftsbury Sculling School in Vermont. This will be awarded by lottery of members who participated in the Learn to Row Day.
