Winter Training
Winter training went excellently at the Y.M.C.A. Everyone has been attending regularly and working very hard. It shows, too, because we've gotten more medals in races than ever before! (We’re getting to be as good as the Olympic Team was!!!) I'm sure that you all know, but if you weren't clued in, at our first race we received 9 medals! At the second race the competition was a little tougher and they only awarded watches for first place winners, but we STILL came home with 5 watches! On the third race we came home with one 3rd, two 2nd, and 5 first place medals. Also, their were also 9 personal bests. I guess there is something to be said for a little work and sweat.
Parent/Crew Meeting
I bet you all were wondering when we were going to have another parent/crew meeting. Well, it's about that time again. The next meeting is on Tuesday, March 19th. It is located in room 222, Mrs. Navarro's room, at 7:00. Remember, this is very important, and we should all bring our lovely parents and show them off. (Give them baths beforehand.)
Food for Regattas
At the Parent/Crew meeting we will be discussing something very important; how to feed our wonderful rowers (except the lightweights). The proposition is to have a volunteer from the crew go out and purchase all of the food needed for a particular regatta. The total will then be divided up among the crew members. We think that this will be a lot less stressful, as there will be no need for running to Meijer at 4:00 in the morning, right before a regatta for a loaf of bread.

Fundraising
We all know that fundraising is very important to our club. We're not only raising money to cover our expenses, but we're also looking to buy a boat. This is goal that may be attainable if we all work REALLY hard and want it bad enough.

So far this year we have raised over $1000 dollars. Keep in mind that about half of that has been divvied up into the student accounts, but that is really good. Remember, too, that we've only been raising money for a few months, and though we've been working hard, we really haven't busted our butts too much.

This is the best we've done in a couple years at least, and you all are to be commended. But that doesn't mean slack off!!! We actually need to pick up the pace. Some exciting things that we are doing right now are continuing with our monthly root beer float sales which net at least $50 a go, and Fazoli's nights which also help out a lot.

Right now we are looking for people to help sell ads for our pop can flyer. There are 20 business size ads that need to be sold that surround our request for pop cans, and the flyers will go out to 1000 people. The ads will be sold for $50 dollars each, so if you are willing to help out in this (fundraising committee, hint, hint) or know of someone who would like to purchase an ad, call Scott or Trisha.

Along with selling these ads, we're going to have to hand out these flyers. I know, I know, its rough, but believe me, it's worth it!
Thought's From the Coach
Hey guys! I don't really have too much to talk about because when I talk everyone on the crew starts to talk too. But seriously, everything is going so well there isn't too much to say. We have done very well in winter training, exceeding my expectations by far. Attendance has been consistent, and everything is shaping up. By the looks of it we will have a wonderful spring season . . . if Mother Nature ever lets us get on the water. And if you get a chance, stop by the boathouse and see our new addition to the family.
F.Y.I.
We have some exciting and important dates coming up that everyone needs to be aware of.
  • March 19th - Parent/Crew Meeting
  • April 2nd - Boathouse Dues are due
       Also Trisha's Birthday
  • April 13th - Stoney Creek
  • April 20th - Grand Rapids*
  • April 27th - Hebda Cup*
  • May 3 & 4 - Wyandotte High School
  • May 11 & 12 - MSRA Regatta
  • May 30th - Recognition Dinner
*indicates plans to leave the night before the regatta.

Also, I know it's hard to make it to Mrs. Navarro's room or to Mrs. Loia's room when the seminar periods are so short, but please try to make an attempt. There are a few regular faces already, and we'd like to see a whole bunch more. You'd be amazed at how much there is for you to do. Plus, we owe it to Mrs. Navarro and Mrs. Loia for all of the things that they have done for us.
Parents Get Involved
This year the parents have done more then just drive us to the erg races, feed us, cheer for us, and clean up after us. Mr. Hewitt and Mr. Skillman (Steve) choose to compete in the Southeast Michigan Indoor Championship "Men's Masters" event. Mr. Hewitt placed 5th and Mr. Skillman placed 6th, respectively.

(We would tell you their times but when you get old they start adjusting your time according to your age and we don't think this is fair so we won't talk about them.)
Thank You
Here's a big shout out to everybody who helped to move the Wah Wah Sum to and from the Midland Center For the Arts. The program that they ran of all of the boats was beautiful and they were very pleased to have our boat there as well.

Also a big thanks to all of the people who decorated signs at Serena's house on March 10th. It was a great time and we ate a lot of spaghetti. Now Mrs. Lynch knows how much a rower CAN eat in a sitting.
Dome River Project *
The Dome River Project is coming right along. The Central High School Industrial Arts program has agreed to not only draw the blue prints, but the building trade classes will do the actual construction of the Dome. The classes will build prefabricated sections at school then they will be assembled on site. Mike Wackerly has graciously donated the use of his car to transport the sections to the site. He figures that if he puts the top down he might be able to take two sections at a time. "It will be a slow process, but it we stick with it we can get it done."

The Industrial Arts program is very excited because it will give the students some on-the-job training. The students will be able to see a project from start to finish. "We just hope the students don't run away when we let them outside," says teacher, Dale Ramseyer. We should be able to complete the project in the next five years as long as the donations keep rolling in.
Additional Regatta
We are looking for one additional regatta to go to this season either on April 5th or May 25th if we all can fit these dates into your schedule.
Boathouse Dues
Here is how the boathouse dues are going to work this year. Everyone's dues are due by April 2nd (Trisha's birthday) or you cannot row. We will be enforcing this strictly as we have had problems in the past. The dues are $55 and checks can be made out to the BCC Crew and turned in, along with the completed application form, to Mrs. Navarro.
Smile Pretty
We have an awful lot of pretty rowers, except Stacey and Trisha, and you can put this date in your calendar to show them off. Tentatively, the date will be May 6th at the boathouse. A price list will be coming home from practice when the date grows near.
