"ERG" Race 1/31/99
The 1999 race season began with an "ERG" race in Gross Point Woods just north of Detroit. An "erg" race is a winter race held indoors on rowing machines. This first race started at about 1:00 and ran until 4:00. Everyone had a great time and, believe me, the young people slept most of the way home... they were exhausted!

Tank practice 3/20/99
In late March the Crew had the opportunity to go to Wyandotte, Michigan (just south of Detroit) and use their indoor practice tanks. Wyandotte has one of the most active rowing programs in the state and their new rowing center is perhaps the best facility in the state. Five high schools and nearly 300 students use the facility on a regular basis.

The rowing facility was built by the Wyandotte Boat Club, a private organization. The local schools provide their own boats and equipment, which they allow the Wyandotte club to use in return for free access to the club facilities.

Wyandotte 4/24/99

Our second regatta was in Wyandotte, just south of Detroit. The Wyandotte Boat Club has one of the best facilities in the state and everyone loves to make this trip.

Again it was an early morning drive for the one day regatta. The day was crisp but clear and beautiful. The breeze picked up before the day was over but it was still a fine experience for everyone.

Wyandotte Hebda Cup 4/30/99

The Hebda Cup is a two day regatta with heats on Friday and the races on Saturday. The crew was excused from school on Friday for the trip down. After the heats, everyone spent the night in a nearby high school. The next morning they hiked to the race site as a warm up.

Toledo International 5/15/99

Toledo is a favorite. The crew left after school on Friday with the largest caravan of the year: seven vans plus one pulling the boats. On arrival the boats were unloaded and rigged while the parent's grilled hotdogs on a charcoal fire.

The crew spent the night on the gym floor of the South Toledo Community center. Even though the adults were tired after the long drive, the crew was full of energy and played basketball until lights out.

Saturday dawned bright and beautiful. It was one of the best rowing days of the year. The Toledo International is a major event with hundreds of boatmen and women. It could hardly have been a better day!

Michigan High School & Junior
Rowing Championship Regatta
Stony Creek Metropark

Stony Creek is a fantastic rowing location. The man-made lake near Pontiac, Michigan was site of the 1979 US Rowing's Women's National Rowing Championship and the 1982 Men's National Rowing Championship regattas. The Metropark has all the equipment necessary for a six lane, fully buoyed internation Albino style race course. Stony Creek Lake is a calm, man-made body of water slightly over 1½ miles long and one mile wide. Having no current the lake is perfect for a fair 2,000 meter rowing course.

The caravan of vehicles and the boat trailer left the boathouse at 4:00am for the 2 hour trip. We arrived in a light rain that lasted most of the morning. The crews all have camping shelters and tarps so we had a dry place to watch the races and eat lunch.

Most races are run on rivers. The lake was a new experience. The staging area is on the beach near the middle of the lake. Crews row to the far end of the lake and race the length. The spectators can cheer their crews on at the 1,000 meter mark. They can also drive through the scenic park to the finish line and watch the crews come in.

Awards Dinner 5/24/99
Each year the crew holds an awards dinner at the boat house. All the crew and their families show up and we gril burgers and dogs then present the years awards.

Among 1999's favorite "awards" was the poster sized caricature of coach Mike Wackerly. The "portrait" was drawn by rowing parent and professional artist Ernie Navarro.
