2003 NATIONAL
LEARN TO ROW DAY
The U.S. Rowing Association has marked May 31, 2003 as National Learn To Row Day. The Bay City Rowing Club celebrated its own "Learn To Row Day" on Saturday, June 7, 2003.
The day proved to be perfect with sunshine, plesant temperatures and glass smooth water.
The turnout for the event was excellent with some 25 visitors plus the usual group of BCRC members. The morning session was able to take out an eight and the afternoon session took out a four. Various members of the club demonstrated rowing in singles and doubles.
A special event this year was an adaptive rowing session for a large group of wheel chair bound athletes from Michigan Sports Unlimited, Inc.. This group of exceptional people received instruction from Coach Greg Dickson and Adaptive Rowing Coach Scott McLeod. Scott then took each person out in a double using the club's specially rigged oarmaster. The event was a great success and the MSU group is discussing additional rowing days.
The club's regular "Introduction to Rowing" course begins soon. The course costs $75 and does not require club membership. The emphasis will be on sculling to allow new rowers to quickly get on the water and enjoy the sport of rowing. For more information link to our Introduction to Rowing page.
