Science at the Boathouse

(No program planned at this time due to Covid-19)

The Rowing Club’s first “Science at the Boathouse” Day took place in October, 2019. The event was planned and coordinated by BCRC adult and youth members along with an MSU Extension Sea Grant Educator. Local Bay City middle school youth and chaperones learned about water quality testing with students performing some of the testing. They observed and counted macro invertebrate species found in the river and with microscopes, looked at invertebrates to determine river health. As part of the Michigan Sea Grant Sturgeon Reef Restoration project, the students also decorated rocks for placement in Saginaw Bay. While at the boathouse, the students got the opportunity to learn proper rowing technique on the ergometers (rowing machines)!

Six local scientists from Dow Chemical Company and DuPont assisted in the educational programming, leading discussions on the science and demonstrating proper lab technique when testing the waters of the Saginaw River. Great Lakes Bay High School Crew members led several sessions for the younger students.  All deemed the event successful!  The middle school students were excited to take part in the Science program as well as the sport of rowing.  Adult and youth rowing club members and local scientists, alike, expressed many positive comments about their experience! Water quality testing kits were provided by Central Michigan University and sponsored by the American Chemical Society Central region’s generous corporate supporters.  Microscopes and related equipment were provided by Ligon Outdoor Center through the Genesee Intermediate School District.
